        Note from the President:
                  November 2019

Hello Nebraska League
In November we honor the men and women who serve our country on Veteran’s Day. I would like to believe in Nebraska we honor and appreciate the men and women who ensure our freedom, every day.
Healthcare providers have the potential to interact with veterans daily. This could be a colleague working beside us. It might be a client seeking healthcare or their family member accompanying them.  Maybe it is our mother, father, brother, sister, spouse, or child that is a member of a military branch or a good friend or neighbor. Lastly it could be a loved one we are honoring that has passed.
The National League for Nursing has resources to help educators prepare the next generation of healthcare providers care for our veterans. The unfolding case studies are a tremendous resource and can be used across all spectrums of nursing education and have potential use for interprofessional education as well.  The insert is from the most recent press release from the NLN on November 11th.
The National League for Nursing highlights Advancing Care Excellence for Veterans (ACE.V) to remind everyone of the importance of taking care of those who put themselves in harm’s way on behalf of the United States. ACE.V unfolding cases were just revised in early 2019 to reflect current standards of care and were written by nurse educators who are veterans themselves or who work with veterans and military families.
In ACE.V’s three unfolding cases, revised in early 2019 to reflect current standards of care, nurse educators meet Butch Sampson, 68, a homeless vet exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam; Jenny Brown, 29, and Randy Adams, 32, who both saw combat in Iraq; and Eugene Shaw, 87, a former Marine who served in Korea. Their unfolding cases spotlight what have been identified as among the most pressing health care issues facing military men and women and their families: the sometimes invisible but chronic effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); traumatic brain injury (TBI); and a host of related physical, mental health, and social ills associated with combat.  (http://www.nln.org/professional-development-programs/teaching-resources/veterans-ace-v)
ACE.V cases include:
• First-person monologues that introduce an individual or couple and the complex problems to be addressed.
• Simulation scenarios designed to help students practice assessment and intervention, with links to appropriate evidence-based assessment tools, including those from the Veteran's Administration, Centers for Disease Control and others. Suggestions for debriefing are included.
• An innovative final assignment that asks students to finish the story.
• An instructor toolkit with suggestions for how to use the various components of the unfolding cases and incorporate them into the curriculum.
Please take time to explore the resources to enhance our ability to educate nurses and others who care for our veterans.
I wanted to mention in addition to the ACES.V resources the November-December issue of Nursing Education Perspectives has four articles related to veterans who chose careers in nursing including nursing education. I encourage all of us to review the November-December issue.
Wishing you well this November and a Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Joan Blum, President of NeLN
